97th Birthday Celebration for Vernon Morgan- 18th August 2018, Lincoln
We were honoured to be invited to join in the birthday celebrations for Vernon Morgan, now residing in Lincoln but a Welshman born and bred and wartime Lancaster bomber pilot. Vernon is one of only six surviving pilots of the Lancaster.
We were contacted by Vernon’s daughter, Linda Clerkin who was keen to organise a special birthday with a Welsh flavour. Born and brought up in Cardiff, Vernon ran the Abingdon Welsh Society for many years at which a Welsh choir would sing every year.
“He is a wonderful man with a lively mind and a great sense of fun. He is not a native of Lincolnshire at all, only moving up to here to be near me as we nursed my mother till she passed a few years ago. However, he is quite emotional about the warm welcome extended to him as an ex Lancaster pilot by “bomber county!” explained Linda
We can testify to Vernon’s alacrity and it was a pleasure to sing on the day and to see the birthday boy enjoying it so much.
The programme for the event was Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn ( in Welsh) , Shenandoah, Fantasia on Welsh Airs ( including “Men of Harlech”), Gwahoddiad (in Welsh), Myfanwy (in Welsh), Calon Lan (in Welsh), Cwm Rhondda and the Welsh national anthem My Hen Wladd (in Welsh of course!).
“100% was given by each member and it really showed. The Welsh songs went down really well”
Final thoughts for the choristers are from MD Ian Grice, “Thank you to Margaret and all the guys who went to sing for Vernon Morgan’s party at Lincoln. You performed amazingly well for an outdoor event. 100% was given by each member and it really showed. The Welsh songs went down so well. Thanks again.
